CLIMB THE FORGOTTEN MAYAN TEMPLE
Discover what the Yucatan has to offer – act like a local! Experience a Mexican market, hidden archaeological treasures, nature, and gastronomy.
Mexican flavors
Together we’ll explore a local market to get a taste of its foods and colors: from spicy habaneros to cacao, the divine food of the ancient Maya rulers. Besides that, you will taste local fruits, spices, and traditional sweets. There will be time for shopping so that you can still enjoy the flavors of Mexico once you’re back home!
A royal Maya tomb
Our journey then leads us to Ek Balam, where treasures laid hidden in a royal Maya tomb for centuries. During the visit you will learn about one of the most intriguing ruins in the Yucatan, and why its king was buried in the mouth of the mythical monster of the earth.
Next will be a bike ride (car is also an option) to a nearby cenote, and underground cave fed by underground rivers, where we’ll swim in the refreshing waters of an open sinkhole.
Final stop is Temozón, a lovely small colonial town known for its longaniza (spicy sausage), and carne ahumada (smoked meat). We will go to a local restaurant to try these traditional dishes (vegetarian options available).
Ek Balam is my absolute favorite.
Temples are shattered throughout and hidden in the jungle, and it is the only archeological site with a royal tomb in Yucatan. Even though you are still allowed to climb the temples, it is not a place where the big crowds go. This makes your visit, and this day, extra special.
